Monster Phonics
At Falkland we use the Department of Education approved scheme of Monster Phonics for our teaching of phonics. Through the teaching of Monster Phonics, the children are taught the essential skills needed for reading. Phonics is taught daily to all children in Reception up to the end of Year 2. Children who have not passes the phonics screen check in Key Stage 1 are then given targeted interventions. Phonics is delivered in a whole class format in Reception and Year 1 then split into groups in Year 2 ensure any gaps are covered. During phonics sessions, Staff systematically teach learners the relationship between sounds and the written spelling patterns, or graphemes, which represent them.
